How to use the average calculator
- Type or paste your numbers, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
- Results update as you type. Anything that isn’t a number is skipped and listed.
Mean, median and mode
- Mean
- The sum divided by the count. It’s what most people mean by “average”, but a single extreme value can pull it a long way.
- Median
- The middle value once the numbers are sorted (or the average of the two middle values). It’s less affected by outliers.
- Mode
- The value or values that appear most often. If nothing repeats, there’s no mode.
Sample or population standard deviation?
Use the population figure when your list contains every value you care about — for example, the scores of everyone in a class. Use the sample figure when your list is a sample drawn from a larger group; it divides by n − 1 to correct for that.
Examples
Mean 14.2857 · median 15 · mode 15
Mean 5 · population standard deviation 2
