Base64 Encode & Decode

Convert text to Base64 and back. Unicode text, including emoji and accents, is encoded as UTF-8 so it decodes correctly anywhere.

How to use the base64 encode & decode

  1. Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. Paste your text or Base64 string.
  3. Tick URL-safe for tokens used in URLs and file names.
  4. Copy the result, or use it as the new input to reverse it.

What Base64 is for

Base64 represents any data using 64 safe characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /). It’s used to embed images in CSS and HTML, send attachments in email, and pass binary data through systems that only accept text. It makes data about a third larger.

Base64 is not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords or secrets.

Examples

hello

aGVsbG8=

héllo

Questions

Why does decoding say the result isn’t readable text?

The Base64 probably holds binary data, such as an image or a file, rather than text.

What does URL-safe change?

It uses - and _ instead of + and /, and drops the = padding, so the string can go in URLs without escaping.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Encoding and decoding happen in your browser.
