Type a status code or a word like “redirect” to see what it means and when it’s used.

How to use the http status code lookup

  1. Type a code, such as 404, or a keyword.
  2. Read the meaning and typical cause.
  3. Type 4xx or 5xx to list a whole group.

The five groups

  • 1xx informational: the request is in progress.
  • 2xx success.
  • 3xx redirection: the content is somewhere else.
  • 4xx client error: something is wrong with the request.
  • 5xx server error: the server failed to handle a valid request.

Which redirect should I use when moving a page?

Use 301 (or 308) for a permanent move, so search engines transfer the old page’s ranking. Use 302 or 307 only for temporary moves.
