How to use the sha-256 hash generator
- Type or paste text.
- Choose hex or Base64 output.
- Optionally enter a secret key for HMAC-SHA256.
SHA-256 vs HMAC
A SHA-256 hash is a 256-bit fingerprint: change one character and the hash changes completely, and you can’t reverse it to get the text back. HMAC combines the hash with a secret key, so only someone with the key can produce the same signature. Webhooks and APIs use it to prove a message is genuine.
Don’t store passwords as plain SHA-256 hashes. Use a slow password hash such as bcrypt or Argon2.
